About Courtside News
Courtside News is an independent NBA reference site. We maintain structured records of the things that are genuinely hard to look up in one place: who was drafted and by whom going back to the first draft, who actually controls each future pick once trades and protections are applied, and what every team is committed to paying under the salary cap.
What this site is, and what it is not
We are not a news wire. We do not run a breaking-news feed, and we do not republish or rewrite other outlets' reporting. If you want to know what happened in the league in the last hour, the beat writers who cover each team do that job better than anyone, and you should read them.
What we do is the slower half of the job. When a trade goes through, the interesting questions are usually structural. Which pick did that team actually give up, and was it protected. How far into the tax does this push them. Which of these contracts is guaranteed and which is not. Those answers live in databases rather than in headlines, and making them readable is what this site is for.
How we got here
The site launched in 2026 as a general NBA news site, summarising coverage from around the league. That was a crowded thing to be, and it was not adding much a reader could not get elsewhere. In August 2026 we retired that archive entirely and refocused on the datasets we compile ourselves. We would rather run a smaller site that is worth reading than a larger one that is not.
What we maintain
- Draft results for every class, 8,015 selections covering 1947 to 2026, each attributed to the franchise that made the pick and the college the player came from
- A future pick tracker, 395 picks deep, recording protections, swap rights and the conditions attached to each selection as written
- Team salary cap sheets and luxury tax positions for all 30 clubs, including dead money still owed to players who have moved on
- A contract book of 351 player deals with cap hits, guarantees, incentives and trade bonuses, plus salary rankings
- A page for each of the 30 franchises, pulling that club's cap position, payroll and pick ownership into a single view
Who runs it
Courtside News is a small independent operation rather than a newsroom with a masthead. The site is built and maintained by its owner, who handles the data pipelines, the site itself, and the editorial decisions about what belongs on it. We would rather say that plainly than imply a staff that does not exist.
Published work carries the byline Alex Carter.
Our sourcing and accuracy standards are set out in the Editorial Policy, and anything we get wrong is logged on the Corrections page.
