How to read this table
- Total cap
- Everything the club is committed to paying against the cap this season, including money owed to players who are no longer on the roster.
- Cap space
- What is left beneath the salary cap. A negative figure means the club is over it. Being over the cap is normal rather than a problem: most teams operate above it and re-sign their own players using exceptions rather than space.
- Active cap
- The portion attributable to players currently under contract and on the roster.
- Dead cap
- Guaranteed money still owed to waived or bought-out players. It counts against the cap and buys the club nothing on the floor, which is why a high figure here constrains a roster more than the headline payroll suggests.
The cap and the luxury tax line are two different thresholds. Sitting above the cap does not by itself create a tax bill, which is tracked separately on the luxury tax page. Individual deals behind these totals are listed in the contract book.
