The Cleveland Cavaliers' Summer League squad heads into its second game after falling 99-93 to the Indiana Pacers. The loss highlighted early growing pains for a group of recent draftees, two-way contracts and undrafted hopefuls eager to make an impression.
Offensively, two players stood out. Nae’Qwan Tomlin, who earned a standard NBA contract after going undrafted, posted a team-high 20 points and added three steals and a block, showing the defensive hustle that helped him secure a roster spot. Fellow rookie Meleek Thomas matched Tomlin’s scoring total, delivering 20 points of which half came in the fourth quarter as he tried to spark a comeback. Thomas’s aggressive shooting style was on display, and his ability to generate points in a pressure situation gave the squad a glimpse of his potential.
Defensively, the Cavaliers struggled to contain the Pacers’ perimeter attack. Indiana knocked down more three-pointers than Cleveland and drew 25 free-throw attempts compared with Cleveland’s 13. In Summer League, the free-throw rule can swing momentum quickly, and the disparity in attempts underscored the need for tighter defensive discipline and smarter foul management.
The two-way players also faced challenges. Ernest Udeh Jr., a 6-foot-11 center on a two-way deal, contributed defensively but did not make a decisive impact in the paint. Tristan Enaruma and Riley Minix, both on two-way contracts, struggled with their shooting, reflecting the typical adjustment period for young bigs transitioning to the professional level. Their limited offensive output highlighted the importance of continued development in the G-League, where they will spend the majority of the season honing their skills.
Looking ahead, the Cavaliers must translate the individual flashes of talent into cohesive team play. Improving perimeter defense, reducing unnecessary fouls and finding offensive rhythm will be critical as they face the Detroit Pistons in their next outing. Success in these areas could earn the prospects more minutes in the G-League with the Cleveland Charge and keep them on the radar for potential call-ups during the regular season.
