The Clippers’ center dilemma runs deeper than a single roster spot. Yanic Konan Niederhauser isn’t expected to be healthy for the season opener, veteran Brook Lopez is 38, and the team’s younger bigs such as Isaiah Jackson have yet to prove they can anchor the paint consistently. The lack of a reliable rim protector leaves the Clippers vulnerable on both ends of the floor, a weakness that has been exposed in recent games.
Gafford fits the Clippers’ missing piece profile. He is described as a solid starter who can change the game on both offense and defense, providing rim protection, efficient finishing around the rim, and a physical presence in the paint. His ability to guard multiple positions and to finish lobs would give the Clippers a dependable option in pick-and-roll situations and improve their rebounding margins.
