Indiana Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan recently reiterated the organization’s confidence in second-year wing Johnny Furphy, even as the young forward continues his recovery from a torn ACL. The injury, which ended Furphy’s season, has not diminished the front office’s belief that his long-term upside remains substantial within the Pacers’ framework.

During a recent appearance on the Pacers’ "Setting the Pace" podcast, Buchanan described Furphy’s progress in the gym as encouraging. "When you see him in the gym, I mean, he's doing some shooting, there's no lump or anything like that," he said. "If you were to see him out there on the court, you wouldn't know he had an injury." The lack of visible swelling and the ability to shoot comfortably suggest that the rehabilitation process is moving forward on schedule.

Buchanan was quick to stress that the Pacers will not rush Furphy’s return. He noted that a torn ACL typically requires ten to twelve months of recovery, adding, "Obviously, it's a serious injury that's going to take some time. But overall, I think our medical staff and Johnny would tell you they're in a good place and optimistic that he'll be back this season. I’m not sure exactly when that will be yet, but you want him to be completely healthy and feeling good and feeling strong and feeling confident before you put them out there."

Beyond the medical timeline, Buchanan highlighted how Furphy’s skill set aligns with Indiana’s up-tempo style. He characterized Furphy as a player who "sprints, he cuts, he crashes and he wants to defend," underscoring the wing’s athleticism and willingness to take on defensive assignments. Those attributes dovetail with the Pacers’ emphasis on quick ball movement and aggressive perimeter defense, making Furphy a natural fit once he regains full health.

The organization’s patience with Furphy reflects a broader commitment to developing its young talent, especially players selected in the second round. Buchanan emphasized that the front office is prepared to give Furphy the time he needs to fully recover, viewing the injury as a temporary setback rather than a derailment of his developmental trajectory.

Looking ahead, the expectation is that Furphy could return around the midway point of the upcoming season, assuming his rehabilitation proceeds without complication. His eventual reintegration will provide the Pacers with an additional versatile defender and high-energy wing, reinforcing the roster’s depth and supporting the team’s long-term competitive goals.
