Veteran coach Frank Vogel, 53, is set to join the Golden State Warriors as associate head coach, reuniting with Steve Kerr after a season as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks. The appointment follows a confirmation from the Warriors organization and adds a former NBA champion to a staff already laden with experience.
Vogel’s résumé includes head-coaching stints with the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers. He guided the Lakers, led by LeBron James, to the 2019-20 NBA title earned in the league’s pandemic bubble. Over a dozen seasons as a head coach, Vogel compiled a 480-422 regular-season record (.532 win percentage) and a 49-43 playoff mark (.533 win percentage), posting winning seasons with eight of his teams.
The Warriors enter the offseason after a challenging 2025-26 campaign that saw the franchise miss the playoffs for the second time in three years. Kerr, the franchise’s winningest coach with 604 victories, secured a multiyear contract extension in May that will keep him at the helm through the 2027-28 season. Adding Vogel signals a clear intent to shore up the defensive side of the ball, an area that has lagged behind the team’s renowned offensive firepower.
Vogel’s reputation as a defensive tactician stems from his ability to instill disciplined schemes and adapt rotations to opponent tendencies. While at the Mavericks, he contributed to a defensive strategy that emphasized perimeter pressure and transition containment. In Golden State’s system, he is expected to assume primary responsibility for game-planning on that end, complementing the offensive frameworks already orchestrated by Kerr and his assistants.
Golden State’s offseason activity extends beyond the coaching staff. The franchise retained veteran contributors Al Horford and Kristaps Porziņģis through contract extensions, preserving depth and experience in the frontcourt. Additionally, the Warriors selected Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Lendeborg arrived as the 2025-26 Big Ten Player of the Year and a consensus First-Team All-American after helping Michigan capture the 2026 men’s national title.
Looking ahead, the integration of Vogel’s defensive acumen with Kerr’s offensive philosophy will be a focal point of preseason preparations. The Warriors still have roster decisions to make, but the combination of seasoned coaching, retained veterans, and a high-upside rookie positions the team to contend for another championship while maximizing Stephen Curry’s remaining prime years.
