Patrick Ewing, the Hall of Fame center and former Georgetown head coach, is set to join the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach. This agreement marks a return to the NBA sidelines for the 63-year-old Ewing and a reunion with the Wizards franchise, where he began his coaching career in the 2002-03 season. He will serve under head coach Brian Keefe, who completed his second full season as head coach after serving as the team’s interim coach during the second half of the 2023-24 season.
Ewing brings a wealth of experience, having spent 15 seasons as an NBA assistant coach with various teams, including the Houston Rockets under Jeff Van Gundy, the Orlando Magic under Stan Van Gundy, and the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets as associate head coach under Steve Clifford. While his six-year tenure as head coach at Georgetown from 2017 to 2023 resulted in a 75-109 record and one NCAA Tournament appearance, his time as an NBA assistant has been more extensive. He worked closely with Dwight Howard during their time in Orlando, though his responsibilities were not limited to big men, covering a wide tactical gamut under the Van Gundys and Clifford.
This addition is a clear move by the Wizards to inject veteran basketball IQ into Brian Keefe's coaching staff. Keefe took over as interim coach during the 2023-24 season. Ewing's presence brings a Hall of Fame perspective to the team, which could be invaluable for player development and establishing a strong cultural foundation within a young, rebuilding roster.
The Wizards' front office appears committed to surrounding Keefe with experienced voices. Ewing previously worked for years to receive a head-coaching opportunity before accepting the job as the Hoyas’ head coach. This strategy suggests a recognition of the steep learning curve for a head coach and an attempt to accelerate the development of the Wizards' core.
With the NBA draft approaching, the coaching staff will immediately focus on integrating new talent. Ewing's immediate task will be to help establish a strong cultural foundation and maximize the potential of key players as Washington aims for significant improvement in the upcoming season.
