Guerschon Yabusele, the 30-year-old former New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls big man, has signed a three-year deal with Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos. The agreement guarantees him a top-tier salary in the EuroLeague and means he will sit out the upcoming NBA season, opting instead for a return to Europe where his earnings are assured.

Over the past two NBA seasons, Yabusele averaged 8.3 points while appearing for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Bulls and the Knicks. His production was modest, but his size and versatility gave teams a low-risk option off the bench. The move reflects a pragmatic decision to secure financial stability as the free-agent market continues to shrink.

Yabusele has been vocal about the league’s pension structure. He explained that three NBA seasons secure a lifetime pension, four add lifelong medical coverage, and five extend that coverage to a player’s family. "If you play three years in the NBA, you get a lifetime pension. After four seasons, medical expenses are covered for life," he told Yahoo. "And after five years, the medical coverage is extended to the entire family. I want to play for five years here in the NBA so that my family can benefit from that lifetime care."

The departure leaves the Bulls and Knicks without a flexible veteran presence on their benches, pushing both clubs to rely more heavily on younger, cheaper talent. Yabusele’s contract likely contains an NBA opt-out clause, a common feature that allows a player to return to the United States if a roster spot becomes available. This flexibility keeps the door open for him to chase the fifth year needed to lock in the full pension and family medical benefits he has publicly emphasized.

Yabusele’s signing underscores how the global basketball economy is reshaping career decisions. As the NBA market contracts, more seasoned players are weighing the certainty of top-EuroLeague salaries against the allure of the NBA’s long-term benefits. Whether he returns to the NBA or continues to forge a legacy in Europe, his next chapter will be watched closely by both leagues.
