Darryn Peterson scored 28 points to lead the Utah Jazz to a 103-102 overtime victory over the Atlanta Hawks on the opening day of the 2026 Salt Lake City Summer League.

The No. 2 overall pick from Kansas shot 11-for-21 from the field and 4-for-7 from three-point range while adding five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. He scored 18 of those points after halftime and hit the go-ahead three in overtime, though he also committed a game-high eight turnovers. Cody Williams added 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go with five rebounds, one steal and two blocks, while Max Abmas and Justin Harmon each scored 15 off the bench.

Peterson's second-half surge and late three show the scoring punch and shot-making that justified his draft position. The eight turnovers highlight the decision-making work ahead for a rookie thrust into high-usage spots. Williams continues to flash two-way impact with efficient scoring and defensive plays that disrupt opponents, creating a natural pairing on the wing with Peterson.

The Jazz's early 16-point lead evaporated because of turnovers and poor late execution. Utah led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter before Atlanta closed the first half on a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to 49-43. By the end of the third, Utah had five scorers in double figures led by Peterson's 18 points. Atlanta forced five turnovers during a 9-0 run in the final 3:30 of regulation, but a pair of free throws from Abmas sent the game to overtime.

This result fits the Jazz's emphasis on young talent development, with Peterson joining 2024 first-rounder Williams as building blocks. The Hawks leaned on their own 2026 picks like Kingston Flemings, who posted 14 points on 4-for-16 shooting with two threes, nine assists and four steals. Flemings controlled tempo and defended at a high level, helping Atlanta win the turnover battle 26-14 and outscore Utah 26-18 in transition. Second-year forward Asa Newell and undrafted forward Gabe Madsen each added 15 points for the Hawks.

The narrow margin and Peterson's overtime heroics underscore how these exhibition games can preview the poise required once regular-season stakes arrive. Both teams return to action Monday, with the Jazz facing the Memphis Grizzlies and the Hawks taking on the Oklahoma City Thunder in continued summer-league play.
