The Toronto Raptors have added former Cleveland guard Malik Thomas on a Summer League contract, a move that signals the organization’s continued search for scoring depth. Thomas arrived in Toronto after a brief stint with the Cavaliers and a standout year at the University of Virginia, where he proved himself as a reliable shooter and a versatile offensive weapon.
Virginia head coach Ryan Odom identified Thomas as the program’s top transfer portal priority in 2025, largely because of his ability to score from any spot on the floor. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard transferred from San Francisco and immediately assumed a leading role in the Cavaliers’ system, earning a spot on the roster through his offensive versatility.
In the 2025-26 season Thomas started all 36 games for Virginia, averaging 12.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists while posting an effective field-goal percentage of 50.6 percent. His impact grew during the 2026 ACC Tournament, where he lifted his scoring average to 16.3 points per game and added 2.3 rebounds, earning a place on the All-Tournament second team and drawing praise for his lockdown defense.
Beyond the raw numbers, Thomas distinguishes himself with a knack for creating his own shot. He consistently finds open space off the dribble, a skill that highlights his underrated ball-handling ability. Although his assist totals were modest, his court vision and willingness to make precise passes were evident throughout the season, especially when driving hard to the basket and spotting teammates on the perimeter.
For Toronto, the Summer League offers Thomas a platform to translate his college success into an NBA context. If he can showcase the same scoring punch and defensive intensity that defined his Virginia tenure, he could earn a two-way or Exhibit 10 deal and provide the Raptors with a flexible backcourt option. The upcoming Summer League games will be the first real test of how his skill set fits within Toronto’s system, and a strong showing could keep his name in the mix as the club finalizes its roster for the regular season.
