Peter J. Holt, principal owner of the San Antonio Spurs, completed an off-market transaction that adds 100 acres to his Hawaiian cattle operation on the Big Island. The new parcel sits within the historic Parker Ranch, raising Holt’s total holdings on the island to roughly 900 acres. The deal, valued at $8 million, reflects a clear commitment to preserve and grow the ranching heritage of the region.
The terrain is classic Hawaiian ranch country: volcanic soil, modest elevation and frequent rain create ideal grazing conditions. Paul Stukin, founder and executive director of Deep Blue HI at Christie’s International Real Estate, explained that these natural attributes helped the land become one of the nation’s largest cattle operations. He noted that while many could buy land and develop a house, Holt chose to keep the property dedicated to cattle, a decision that speaks to his personal values and long-term vision.
Holt’s purchase is backed by his leadership of Holt Cat, the nation’s largest Caterpillar dealer, where he serves as CEO and general manager. The company’s scale and profitability provide the financial muscle for a transaction of this size, underscoring Holt’s willingness to allocate capital toward purpose-driven assets rather than short-term speculation. The price per acre, while not disclosed in detail, signals a significant investment in land that holds both economic and cultural value.
The acquisition joins a wave of billionaire land purchases across Hawaii. Mark Zuckerberg’s $300 million compound spans more than 2,300 acres on Kauai, Oracle founder Larry Ellison controls about 98 percent of Lanai, and Jeff Bezos spent $78 million on a 14-acre estate in Maui. Unlike those luxury-oriented acquisitions, Holt’s focus remains on ranching, preserving the land’s historic use rather than converting it into a private resort. This distinction highlights a different approach to wealth and land stewardship among high-net-worth individuals.
Within the Spurs organization, Holt’s family has overseen the franchise for 23 years, guiding a championship dynasty built on stability and thoughtful roster building. The same measured, long-term planning evident in the team’s on-court strategy is reflected in Holt’s land investment. As the Spurs negotiate a new arena and chart their future, Holt’s ability to balance business interests with the franchise’s needs will remain a key factor in the ownership group’s strategic calculus.
