Oziyah Sellers wrapped up a single season at St. John’s and is now on the Knicks’ radar for a roster spot. The freshman guard said the same "grit, refusal to lose and daily fight" he saw in the Knicks’ championship run lives in his own game. "Coming from St. John’s, I feel like we had that same mentality. We wanted to win really bad," Sellers explained, adding that the transition in mindset was "not too hard".

Sellers spent the bulk of his college season playing home games at Madison Square Garden, a venue that also serves as the Knicks’ home court. That experience gave him a familiarity with the arena’s atmosphere and a built-in connection to a fanbase that often overlaps between the college and pro teams. "Obviously, being at St. John’s we play pretty much all our home games at the Garden. So I feel like we have a lot of the same fanbase. Knicks fans, a lot of them are St. John’s fans," he said, describing the situation as a "perfect fit".

The Knicks’ identity after their first championship in 53 years has centered on toughness, defensive intensity, and a local pride that rewards players who embody those traits. Sellers’ own style, defensive-first, willing to take the extra pass, and comfortable with physical play, mirrors that identity. His description of a "daily fight" aligns with the culture the Knicks have cultivated, making his potential contribution feel like a natural extension of the team’s recent philosophy.

Earning a roster spot in New York is never easy, especially for a player who entered the league undrafted. Sellers will need to translate his college experience and mindset into consistent performance in training camp and preseason action. The Knicks will be looking for players who can sustain the high-energy, gritty approach that defined their championship season, and Sellers’ familiarity with the Garden crowd could give him a small edge in that evaluation process.

The next milestone is the preseason roster deadline, when the Knicks must decide which players to keep for the regular season. Sellers’ ability to demonstrate the same mental toughness he praised at St. John’s will be the key factor in determining whether he secures a place on the squad. If he does, the narrative of a hometown product seamlessly fitting into the Knicks’ revived culture will continue to resonate with fans across the city.
